Bloomfield Health Services

Specialised Rehabilitation Unit

In collaboration with mental health services at the HSE, Bloomfield opened Ireland’s first specialised rehabilitation unit in 2018. The Specialised Rehabilitation Unit (SRU) provides inpatient mental health rehabilitation services to adults with complex continuing mental health care needs.

The purpose of the SRU is to accept referrals from acute services within the HSE for up to two years of inpatient care. Its goal is to give service users the skills and coping mechanisms to live fulfilled and more independent lives in their communities.

Bloomfield Hospital is providing a 12 bed SRU for HSE service-users with enduring mental health difficulties, predominantly those with a diagnosis of psychosis and associated challenging behaviours. The goal of the project is to support residents over 18 – 24-month period through a progressive rehabilitation and recovery focused programme, so that they are provided with the opportunity to successfully transition from the SRU to supported residential settings in their own communities.

Led by a rehabilitation consultant psychiatrist, our multidisciplinary team develops bespoke programmes tailored to the needs and recovery goals of each individual.
